Sewing knit and fleece, why does it always get wavy? I have a great machine…?

Whenver I sew knit, my stitches get wavy. I would like to shorten some of my t-shirts, but whenver I sew knit or fleece to shorten them, it always gets wavy and puckered. I have a very expensive machine that has overlock and also does empbroidery. I thought I was a decent sewer, but I am having trouble here. Any suggestions?
