what happens when you place a can of water on a hot burner?
after heating it, then submerge it in water…what happens?
If the can is sealed before heating it, the pressure inside from the superheated water can become enough that the container may explode violently. Do not try that at home.
If the can is open to the air, the temperature of the can itself will not increase much above the boiling point of water as long as a significant amount of water remains in the can, even those parts in contact with the burner or open flame. The heat will be conducted to the inside where it goes into boiling the water instead of causing a temperature increase. If you then empty the can and plunge it in water, the can will of course cool rapidly to the temperature of the water bath.
If you cap the can immediately after turning off the burner so that air cannot get back in, the air inside the can will be displaced by the steam. As the can cools, the steam condenses back into water, making the pressure inside the can very low. The pressure of the outside air will then be enough to crush the can.
