gas fireplace pilot going out?
I was just wondering why this question is asked so many times and they are always “resolved” by “Best Answers” that are wrong or at best “Best Guesses”. The pilot goes out because the thermopile/thermocouple gets carbon and gas byproduct on it, creating an insulated barrier. It cannot produce enough millivolts from the pilot flame (HEAT) to keep the gas valve open. I fix these things for a living. Use emery cloth or 120grit to clean it up all shiny. Works about 90% of the time. There are other causes too but that is the one I come across most. I have to laugh listening to some of the answers that are rated 5 star. It’s nice that they want to help, it’s just funny.

One reason is perhaps that the thermocouple is the only part or component that the average person knows about on a gas appliance and they simply shoot form the hip… in an honest effort to be helpful.
Same thing seems to happen with blaming the t-stat for any and all furnace and A/C problems.
The truth is, as you know, the steps to positively determine the thermocouple is actually bad requires more than just one or two lines of typing, so a certain amount of this is just laziness… and, yes, I’ve been guilty myself.
You really want to see some misperceptions, ask a question about thermopiles and burners not lighting. LOL!
