USB Currency Scanner?
I intend to develop (graduation project) a Bill validator which scans the paper currency under Ultravoilet , infrared and White light. Then the scan is compared with templates at a standard PC using WIndows XP . Do you know any such scanner? Can u provide any help in this regard?
The white light is not a problem any scanner uses that. IR could be a problem. UV is definitely a problem.
UV damages semiconductor based sensors without extreme modification and filtering. Most CCD & CMOS sensors have UV filters or coatings to prevent damage to the sensor. All scanners currently manufactured use semiconductor based sensors. You would have to set up sets of mirrors and frequency dividers to get the frequency low enough to use a semiconductor sensor on. Although they did may tube based copiers into the 70′s that could be modified for use with UV. The size would a bit daunting.
Your next problem is that short wave UV will not pass through most glass so you can only work with long wave UV radation. To get glass that will pass short wave UV is extremely expensive. A 2″ lens for a NASA satellite cost 100′s of thousands of dollars. I doubt your project can afford that.
IR Scanners are not a commercial product. IR scanner could be built. IR is a matter of a strong enough light source and the use of the right filters. Building that into a flat bed scanner would be difficult at best. Relative easy to use a fixed position scanner from an ADF based scanner. The light souce would need to be replaced, strengthen, and filtered. The rest of the problems are all do able.
