Can you get the smell of cigarette smoke out of plastic toys?
I bought a child’s activity desk from a flea market. It was kind of windy outside that day, so I didn’t realize that the plastic (it is a Step Two molded plastic set) smelled like smoke. We packed it into the car and went to shop and eat lunch- when we got back, our car smelled like a stale ashtray. Yuck.
So, I can’t return it, and my son really really really wants to play with it (it has been relegated to the porch for over a week). So, I want to know if I can get the smell out so I can bring it indoors. I don’t have ourdoor storage to leave outside, so it will have to come in at some point.

Plastic is one of the materials that really absorbs odors. Wash the desk all over using a mixture of 3 Tbs baking soda to a quart of water. Leave a baking soda paste all over the desk as much as you can for at least 20 minutes. Can you get a garbage bag big enough to fit the whole desk in it and close the bag? If so put the desk in the bag with crumpled newspapers or some loose activated charcoal, close the bag and leave it for a few days. The charcoal and newspaper will absorb a lot of the odor. Repeat the process if necessary. It may take a few treatments to get rid of it.
An odor neutralizing spray might help, but I’m not sure I’d want to use it if my little child was playing with it.
