Salsa lid bulges, though still “sealed” – Could it be bacteria inside?
I purchased some restaurant salsa from our local grocery store- it’s the salsa from Jose Peppers, a restaurant chain in KC. It is in the deli section in a cool open fridge-thingy. It’s just a simple plastic bowl with plastic lid and one of those zip seals that circles the lid. I thought it was pretty tight, but often it leaks before opened. Weird!
I really LOVE the stuff, BUT…one day, my unopened salsa was in my fridge with water around the base of the bowl- it smelled like SALSA! I looked and the seal was still on- it had never been opened. I thought nothing of it cuz the date was fine.
The next day, I looked again- more water and this time the lid had bulged up and I could see how it was leaking! It’s almost like the bowl of salsa was breathing! This really freaked me out- sounds like some toxic gas built up in there! I never opened or ate it. Is it me, or is that a sign of bacteria?!!
I would be careful with trying to eat it. Botulism is a bacteria that forms during the canning process, so even though you haven’t opened it there could be just enough oxygen inside to aid the growth of the bacteria. When in doubt, throw it out. It isn’t worth getting sick just save a dollar or two.
