Crate Training question-What to use to cover the cold floor?
I adopted 2 puppies recently. They are 12 weeks old. The one is doing fine in her crate & not going to the bathroom in it. Her sister, is not. Despite us going home during lunch breaks, she still manages to urinate in her crate during the day (she holds it all night for us). We had towels on the bottom of the crates, but the internet says to remove all “absorbant” things from the crate. So I was wondering what I should use instead of a towel for the cold, metal floor of the crate?
Any suggestions would be helpful
cheap towels and rags at first, so that you can throw em in the wash with some bleach so no smell is left, till they learn not to potty. Dont listen to the bare crate theory, its uncomfortable for the dog and just as messy. Your crate might be too large. When first training the dog your crate should only be big enough to stand up, turn around, and lay down comfortably. There should be not enough room where they will be able to potty with out having to be in the mess. Puppies bladders dont have the capacity to hold for more than a few hours at a time. Since she is holding all night, sound behavioral. Let her out more. Take her directly outside from the crate sometimes carrying her out so she cant pee on the floor, or leash her and right outside. Then play with her for a good 45 minutes. Take her out frequently, praise her like a idiot ALOT for going outside. Dont use newspaper its messy, it gets ink all over the dog, and its stinky and non absorbent. Sometimes the dog will eat it and cause a digestive problem or blockage. Leaving it empty also is messy causing the dog to become soiled and smelly, also laying in concentrated urine can burn the skin and ruin and stain the hair. Potty pads defeat the purpose of crate training and can be shredded and ingested by a dog if left unattended. Hope it helps.
