I go to the Waffle House
Each morning at five
I like to watch her get out of car
I can see the apron under her coat
I can feel her fire
In that hour before the rush
Amidst the crackling bacon
She fixes her hairnet just so
I don’t care if gets everywhere
For some of her in me
The waitresses like to act pretty
Tips make or break a day
Not for Molly, no no
She’s the waffle machine Queen
Batter me with love

No, I imagined it during an out of body experience I had in 1974.
And, the other typo…if ‘it’ get everywhere..gawd
You know, TD, I don’t normally answer to these types of questions. I read the hell of a lot of them, though.
I was prompted to respond to your poem because I noticed one thing that differentiates your poetry from the work of the thousand other poems that float around here: your poetry actually has merit based on the fact that you’re really saying something.
I must admit that I think you probably wrote this in a short period of time, but that’s really beside the point. I’m absolutely proud of you for actually penning something that has literary value. I see far too much posted on here (and around the internet) that I feel people write just to be writing, or just so they can call themselves a poet.
I don’t normally go with poetry that’s not rhythmic, but I do accept free-verse if it has a meter (which free-verse is supposed to) or at the least, a flow. This poem has a flow – a good movement from thought to thought. I can hear the bacon and I can smell it. I can smell the smell of the coffee and the exhaust from the outside of the building from when someone walks in and there’s this mix of smells. I can also envision Molly.
She must be a hell of a waitress. =)
